Every recruiter knows that moment: the uneasy pause after sending the first slate of candidates to a new client. You wait, hopeful, because you know there’s strong talent in the mix. But then comes the call.
Purple Squirrel Advisors had a new client who was searching for an Operational Leader. We sent the initial slate over, confident in the quality and alignment of the candidates.
Then the feedback arrived: they were not happy with the resumes.
We scheduled a call right away. Not to defend our work, but to understand their concerns. What unfolded was a great reminder of why recruiting is both art and science.
It turned out there were two core issues:
- The client had scanned the resumes without fully reviewing the candidate profiles we created. Those profiles provide vital context about leadership style, results, and cultural alignment, details that go far beyond bullet points.
- A new client relationship still taking shape. As with any new partnership, we were still learning their unique definition of “fit.” For this organization, longevity was critical. They valued leaders who had built long-term success within one company, while others might prefer candidates with diverse experiences across multiple environments.
Once we clarified those expectations, we reframed the slate together, and interestingly, they circled back to one of the very first candidates we had sent. That individual is now thriving in the role, driving measurable impact, and has become one of their top internal champions.
A few months later, the client called back and said, “We need another one just like him.”
This experience reminded Purple Squirrel Advisors of something fundamental about leadership hiring:
- The best candidate on paper isn’t always the best candidate in practice.
- The best client relationships are built through open dialogue, not blind agreement.
With that foundation in place, the second-generation leader gained the confidence to take on a larger role, supported by accurate data, reliable systems, and a trusted financial partner.
Behind every successful placement is a conversation that deepens trust, sharpens understanding, and aligns vision with reality. That’s where great recruiting happens.
