With technology creating a less personalized, more frustrating experience for candidates in today’s job market, it’s more important than ever for companies to leave each applicant with a positive impression, regardless of the hiring outcome.
According to CareerBuilder’s 2015 Candidate Behavior study, forty percent of candidates feel that the application process has become more difficult in the last five years. Many are left frustrated with the communication, lack of personalization, and the lengthy application process.
Regardless of whether a candidate is the right fit for the position, the hiring process provides a clear window into the inner workings of the company and leaves the candidates with an impression that will last a lifetime. A candidate’s experience will likely be something that they share with their friends, future colleagues, and they might even share online, so it’s important companies make it a positive one.
THE INTERVIEW PROCESS
The interview process, in particular, will give candidates a clear window into how the company makes decisions, what the communication style within the company is and how the company treats prospective and current employees.
In order to provide a positive experience for all candidates, clear communication is key. Efficiently following up with candidates who are not qualified for the position, as well as providing clear next steps and a timeline for candidates who are being considered can make all the difference.
In a recent interview, Rosemary Haefner, Chief Human Resources Officer at CareerBuilder, commented on how critical the communication process is. “As disappointed as they will be, candidates would rather hear bad news than be strung along in hope they will hear back.”
INTERNAL COMMUNICATION
In order for companies to provide each candidate with clear communication, the leadership team needs to set the expectations internally. Ensuring that each decision maker within the company has the same expectations for the job opening is critical. The team must also agree on how to evaluate potential candidates. This will provide a smoother experience for the applicants, and will also lead to a more efficient hiring process for everyone involved.
